Long, green lashes? Yes please!

I love eyelashes. I love putting on my mascara and seeing how long they can go with 3, 4, sometimes 5 coats of mascara. It’s like a gym workout for my lashes. I want them long, fluttery and fabulous and my problem most of the time is that natural mascaras just don’t have that oomph that non natural ones do. I’ve finally found a mascara that I’m happy with but I’m also a sucker for when someone says to me ‘want to try this product that grows your eyelashes?’ Er. Yes. Yes I do want to try that product. How about giving me a lifetime supply of it as it sounds amazing? Well this is what happened to me (trying the product, not the lifetime supply part). I came across NuvaLash on twitter and immediately got overexcited about this lil’ natural lash enhancing serum (I realise this sounds a little sad but I tend to get excited about these sorts of things, it’s just who I am).

I’m currently testing the serum on my lashes (and brows, one is just sooooo patchy!) so will let you know how I go but thought it would be great to find out why the fabulous Lauren co-founded this product with her husband, that is rated zero on the Think Dirty app, has nothing but wholehearted goodness, a lot of love and some darn good ingredients to give you the flutter you deserve. Introducing the amazing Lauren Bilon…

What is Nuvalash and why did you set it up?

NuvaLash is an all-natural eyelash & eyebrow enhancer that incorporates powerful botanicals to deliver results that rival those obtrained through prescription lash drugs or chemical-loaded over-the-counter options. NuvaLash is self-preserving so its formulated without any preservatives or other potentially harmful ingredients.

I had the misfortune of losing my eyelashes after the birth of my daughter so I tried using a prostglandin based serum that, while effective in bringing my lashes back, caused some major unwanted side effects (it turned my eyelids purple for a very long time). Obviously I had to stop using that product but once its effects wore off I was still left with literally no lashes. So I opted for some good ol’ glue-on false lashes, but then ended up getting the glue in my eye and it caused a pretty sever eye infection which required a lengthy course of antibiotics. (Throw arms up in air) It was at that point I decided to look for a way to address my eyelash situation naturally. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything commercially available that was natural and that seemed like it would work well, so I literally started inventing it myself. The project began with me compiling natural ingredients that had research pointing to potential effectiveness for lashes like mine and within two years my little project became a full-blown product that is now shipping all over the world.

Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?

The cosmetic industry is notorious for using harmful and/or toxic ingredients in a whole array of products, including those that go on our faces and around our eyes. There are so many studies available to date that prove that we need to steer completely clear of so many of the commonly used ingredients because of their toxic, and carcinogenic effects on the body. There really is no excuse for companies to continue to expose unknowing consumers to these toxic substances, yet it continues to happen across the beauty industry. High quality natural and/or organic beauty products tend to do a good job of leaving out these harmful ingredients, and as a result, tend to be much safer and more healthy for consumers to use. It’s important to note, however, that not every product that is marketed as natural or organic is actually safe, healthy, or effective. We think this is very serious and have taken a very firm stance as a company on increasing awareness of these things.

What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?

Be careful which products you purchase. There are many ‘natural or organic’ products being offered today which are far from it. Some are adulterated with unsafe, toxic, or non-natural ingredients. Others contain only a small percentage of actual natural or organic content. The term for this practice is green-washing, and it came be very profitable for the unethical companies who engage in it. Here is a link to a great piece that exposes 20 major brands who are known green-washers: http://greenbeautyteam.com/features/greenwashing-cosmetics-brands/

One classic example of this: products containing ‘grapefruit seed extract’ as a natural preservative. Anyone looking at this ingredient would obviously assume it is completely natural, but several studies have proven that grapefruit seed extract only works as a preservative if it is adulterated with parabens. So the reality is that products containing this ingredient are actually exposing their unknowing users to hidden parabens that are not disclosed on the product packaging. As nice as pure grapefruit seed extract sounds, it unfortunately has no preservative capability whatsoever.

It’s actually scary a lot of natural products out there that are actually more harmful than some synthetically composed/non-natural alternatives.   There is a really useful app called “think Dirty” that we recommend.

  • Exfoliate on a regular basis
  • Sunscreen 365 days of the year

Helena Lane Skincare LavenderWhite Willow Exfoliator Mask

Oz Naturals Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Skin

Dr. Alkaitis Organic Night Cream

Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?

That’s a great question. I think a lot of people, myself included, can really benefit from shifting the focus of their beauty/wellness efforts in an inward direction from time to time. For me, nothing beats time spent in nature to recharge my mental and emotional glow. I am also a big believer in mini-escapes throughout the day or week where I do absolutely nothing for about 20 minutes. That and comedy. Laughing is great for facial strengthening & toning isn’t it?!

For skincare and cosmetics, its really all about preventative maintenance.

What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?

Foreo Luna – An ultrasonic facial brush for really effective, but at the same time gentle, cleansing. Plus it looks really cool! Its pretty space-age

What are your plans for Nuvalash in the future?

We’ve been seeing success within the spa and salon industry in North America and are excited to introduce NuvaLash to the European market soon!

We’re very committed to advocating safe and natural beauty products, and raising awareness around ingredients that should be avoided, so will certainly continue to do that into the future.

Sentences to finish.

I love natural beauty products because…They can be just as effective as less safe chemical-based alternatives without the health risks.

If I could tell my 20 something self, one piece of beauty advice, it would be…Use sunscreen! Back in early adulthood I would cover myself in babyoil and go for the darkest tan I could achieve. Now I’m on a mission to reverse the damage associated with that type of sun exposure . We live and learn. If I do need to add a little colour to my skin these days I’ll apply an organic spray tan.

My favourite beauty quote is… “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful” – Sophia Loren

My favourite beauty resource is…EWG’s Skin Deep cosmetics database. Its a huge database containing all kinds of beauty and health related products that has sound, independent, information.

To relax I…This is something I really need to work on lately! Between raising two young children and running my company sometimes it can feel like I can’t even sit down for a moment’s rest. From time to time I will set time aside for some serious pampering and spend a few hours at a spa. Any time I can spend in nature is time well spent, and at night I practice the 4-7-8 breathing technique to wind  down and it works like a charm!
