Green Make Up, Emmily Banks & Fangirling.

It’s not often I have a fangirl moment where I’m blown away by the creative work of someone and their utterly cool life. But I totally am with this gal. Emmily Banks is an Aussie Make Up Artist who uses natural and organic wherever she can. Firstly she is utterly gorgeous, secondly she has a glow that all of us know, when someone is doing all the right things (juicing, meditating, exercise and all that fabulous jazz) that is the glow you get. And finally, she has sent me SO many GORGEOUS images of work she has done, I fear I might just have to make this post no writing and all pretty pictures. But alas, we all love a good interview and after all, she is a green makeup artist so we need to know what her top favourite products are. So without further ado, the utterly fabulous, Emmily Banks.

What is Depths of Beauty and why did you set it up?

Depths Of Beauty is a platform completely dedicated to beauty from the inside out .. and the outside in (especially when it comes to beauty!).

I started out as a mainstream Makeup Artist for several years before transiting to all Natural and Organic Beauty. I have always had a passion for health, fitness and wellness so it just made sense to start practising with products I feel passionate about using and supporting. Plus there are so many beautiful natural, vegan, organic, cruelty free beauty and skincare products available these days! I am SO excited to be able to share my findings and encourage people to support healthier brands and look after themselves and the planet!

Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?

Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs between 60%-90% of the ingredients in beauty/skincare products, straight through our bloodstream. Many toxic ingredients in beauty and personal care products can be directly linked to skin conditions and irritations, hormone, liver and other vital organ dysfunction and even tumours and cancer.

Additional to looking after your health, using natural products is also environmentally friendly because it doesn’t create demand for the production of toxic chemicals or leave harmful residue during disposal into the sewer or landfills.

Natural and Organic brands also tend to have an invested interested in the welfare of animals (ie not testing on them!) and ethical labour.  Need I say more?

What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?

My first hot tip to everyone is WEAR LESS, MORE OFTEN and focus on beauty from the inside out first. No amount of makeup will make you look as healthy and radiant as a healthy lifestyle and diet will do. As far as beauty tips – focus on swapping the products that cover the largest surface area of your body first (and that you most regularly use) – skincare, body wash, deodorant, etc. Also unrefined organic oils are your best friends when it comes to skincare! For extra tips and information, I post a lot of reviews on my site..www.depthsofbeauty.com.au

Do you have a daily beauty & hair routine, and if so, could you share it with us?

Honestly, I don’t wear much (if any makeup) if I don’t have jobs. I always moisturise my face and body (day and night) with certified organic oils! I’m currently loving jojoba, rosehip and argan oil and also some oil mixtures from Mukti organics and Vanessa Megan. Hair care wise, I use a Natural Shampoo and conditioner from Yarok and add a touch of oil (argan or a mix of others) to the tips of my hair. Makeup wise – I usually just lightly conceal any redness with RMS uncoverup and add a touch of blush and lipbalm with Hurraw tinted organic lipbalms (used as a blush and lipcolour).

What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?

Less is more.. (its true!)

What are your top 3 favourite beauty & hair products?

OILS – basically all oils that are unrefined and certified organic are incredible for the skin. Full of antioxidants and other amazing nourishing, hydrating and antibacterial ingredients.

RMS Uncover Up – can be used as a concealer or all over foundation. Amazing ingredients and super nourishing!

Ere Perez Duo Bronzers – all natural and amazing colours!

Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?

Exercise regularly , eat wholefoods, drink plenty of fluids and organic vege juices and relaxxxx – meditate, practise yoga, laugh!

Let your skin breathe and always use as organic as possible products on your skin.

What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?

So many amazing natural beauty brands have been reformulating and their products are now working just as well as the toxic mainstream brands – its very exciting!!!!

What are your plans for Depths of Beauty in the future?

International growth to ultimately spread the importance of natural beauty far and wide! I hold workshops, events, consults and there’s You Tube videos on the way… and much more!

Sentences to finish.

I love natural beauty products because… they are nourishing and healthy for my skin and body AND they work just as well as the mainstream brands!

If I could tell my 20 something self, one piece of beauty advice, it would be… lay off the blush love – haha.

My favourite beauty quote is… Again, Less is More!

My favourite beauty resource is… Depths Of Beauty (haha, its true though, there’s not many other reputable natural beauty sites run by MUA’s around). I also love “A Green Beauty Team” by Kirsten Arnett.

To relax I… swim in the ocean and also run!

Oh my! SUCH a great interview with so many nuggets of advice! The brands make me so excited about moving to NZ so I can try them all!  If you want to check out Emmily’s website, you can find it here > http://www.depthsofbeauty.com.au/

Great interview but sad to read “Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs between 60%-90% of the ingredients in beauty/skincare products, straight through our bloodstream.” …..no one even seems to know where this advice comes from and it is unlikely to be accurate information. It’s not possible for everything to pass to the bloodstream our skin protects us for a reason.

Very interesting point Sarah! I wonder where it did come from! *runsofftoresearchfurther* I always take that as verbatim for some reason, maybe because I’ve been told it so much! 🙂
