What I find really exciting, is that there are more and more natural beauty online (and offline) stores popping up around the world. Most of them have actually been around for years, quietly working away, spreading the word about natural beauty wherever they go, but it’s only recently that people have started to take more notice and are hunting these shops out. One such mecca, in Canada, is Louche Lily. It’s been around for SEVEN years spreading the natural beauty word with glamour, sass and how to rock the catwalk without compromising on quality. So I wanted to chat to the owner of this fab store, learn some tricks from the makeup artist herself and find out why natural is best. Take note girls, there are some uh-mazing products recommended below. Introducing the incredible, Lyz Plant.
What is Louche Lily and why did you set it up?
I actually bought the shop and flipped it a little bit, changed the name, brought in new lines and focused on makeup more. I’m also a makeup artist and I’ve always wanted to take “eco” to a fashionable place. So total the shop has been around for about seven years already (!)
Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?
There is the big movement now of healthier food and understanding what that means and where it comes from, I think what we put on our skin is next. Our bodies don’t want to process synthetic things and can react in extreme ways when it tries to do so, it also gets passed on to the next generation – crazy! It’s surprising to me that so many people still don’t believe or understand that what we put on our skin goes inside and to our blood stream. To that I remind them that we have birth control patches that administer through the skin- you’re going to trust a drug to pass through the epidermis and into your blood stream so that you don’t get pregnant, but somehow you don’t think that lotion you put on every. freaking. day ingredient wise will do anything? I also feel that the “real deal” is also incredibly more luxurious – made in small batches, the highest quality ingredients from around the world blended carefully together versus products that to me are like creamed plastic pumped out of huge vats = no thanks. For me it’s a no brainer 😉
What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?
As you run out of things, start looking for a replacement. Head to shops where you can try and ask for samples, we send samples out all of the time. Try not to get frustrated if something isn’t the perfect fit – just like in synthetic land, there will be products that you’ll like and ones that you don’t. I hear a lot from clients who say “well I tried an eco shampoo and I didn’t like it so I went back to my old stuff” It can be daunting but also a lot of fun. Get some girlfriends together and split the cost to try a bunch of different things and divvy them up- So much fun!
Do you have a daily beauty routine, and if so, could you share it with us?
Oooooo! I’m a bit of a product junky so a lot of it varies depending on my mood or season! I live in Canada so seasons vary incredibly. I’m a big fan of oils, masks and serums. In the morning I don’t use a cleanser, I just splash my face with water , use a toner like One Love Organics Vitamin D Active Moisture Time Release Mist (say that five times fast!) a light lotion like Kimberly Sayer’s Ultra Light Moisturizer with SPF 30 or John Masters Rose & Apricot Antioxidant Day Creme and always 100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Eye Cream At night or in the winter I LOVE One Love Organics Skin Savior Beauty Balm – it’s amazing, you can cleanse with it and take off makeup and it’s one of my fave products for moisture. 100% Pure Super Fruits Scrub & Mask is a gentle scrub with a hydrating lotion base and it smells super juicy.
For makeup I do have a go-to, five minute look I do when I’m running out the door (which is always it seems!):
Kjaer Weis Foundation used just where I need extra coverage, used almost like a concealer
Vapour Mesmerize liner pencil in Ink used just on the tight line (I call it sneaky liner as it doesn’t look like you’re wearing eyeliner, it’s just smudged in between and at the base of where your lashes grow – not on top)
100% Pure Mascara in Blackberry (dark purple) or Chocolate (dark brown) you won’t BELIEVE how incredible these smell!
What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
Subtleties are key
What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?
Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?
Trust me, it really does make such a difference to your skin and how healthy and glowy you look by what you consume. I know you’ve heard it a bazzilion times but tons of water, fruit and veg! Just being you and doing what you love shows up on your face, find that exercise that you love and put yourself first sometimes – oh, and smile as often as you can. Unhealthy lifestyles are worn like a mask… and don’t get me started on the skin of smokers…
What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?
